In order to get rid of traffic snarls at the five toll nakas in the city, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has asked transport experts from IIT-Bombay to help them to do away with the traffic in order to facilitate the commute of lakhs of motorists.

The five toll nakas in the city are located at Dahisar, Mulund (LBS Marg), Mulund (Eastern Express Highway), Vashi and Airoli that act as the five entry and exit points of the city.

According to MSRDC estimates, around 22,000 vehicles pass via these five toll booth in an hour every day.

A MSRDC official said, "We have invited experts from the transportation department of IIT-B to help us in suggesting measures that will have to be undertaken to ease traffic movement at five toll booths. We have written to them around two days ago wherein the invitee members can suggest use for the same," adding, "At any given point of time, more than 5 lakh vehicles pass daily from the five entry and exit points of the city and during peak hours, there are long queues that pile up traffic in nearby city roads also."

Earlier, the MSRDC had asked the toll operators to have yellow lines marked at the toll booth that are enmarked few meters from the actual toll collection booth, and in case the traffic goes beyond that yellow lines, the toll operator should allow vehicles to pass without paying tolls to mitigate traffic snarls.

However, MSRDC officials opined that it was mere suggestion to the toll operator and there is no such mention in the contract of toll agreement signed wherein vehicles are to be let off for free if traffic is piled up beyond yellow line. Hence, alternate solution is required wherein vehicles are not let off for free but they do not either cause traffic snarls.

Meanwhile, as per the agreement, toll collection at the five entry and exit points of the city will be continued till the year 2026.
