The number of students going to international universities for exchange programmes has almost doubled in the last two years at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), data has revealed. As per the data published by Insight- an in-house magazine of the institute, more number of students from the institute are now preferring to go to international universities for a semester exchange. From 17 students in 2013, 43 students went for an exchange abroad in 2016.

As per the data acquired from the International Relations Office of the Institute, between 2007 to 2011, there was a rise of about 25% in the number of students going for exchange programmes. While the number went down in 2012 and 2013 , the increasing trend again started from 2013 to 2016. In 2016, 43 students from across the departments went for exchange programmes.

“The number of outbound students across the years has shown a generally increasing trend, in large part due to more and more people getting to know about exchange programs and students having more options to choose from, given the increasing number of MoUs being signed. When it comes to universities, Singapore based National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) are the most sought after, together accounting for a third of outbound exchanges probably due to the TF learn funding available for exchange to Singapore” states the report.

“Increasing number of students are opting for student exchange programmes. We wanted to give the current students an idea of what it is like and what the trends have been, so they can make their choices accordingly,” said Anand Dhoot, a member of Insight who worked on the report.

Maximum number of students who went for the exchange were from the dual degree programmes within which the largest number of students (39) were from Electrical Engineering followed by mechanical engineering (34). While 52 students from the bachelors programmes went for the exchange, 21 students were from Masters- which largely included students from SJM school of management and Industrial design Centre (IDC).

“Across programmes, nearly 90% of outbound exchange population comprises of UGs, out of which Dual Degree students make up more than twothirds. Most students preferred to go in the third and fourth semester.” states the report.

A senior professor from the institute said "For the last 3-4 years, more students have shown interest in doing a semester at an international university. Most students are interested in taking up some courses that those universities offer along with the added advantage of getting to study in another country".
