In order to beat the election code of conduct for assembly polls, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) plans to clear and organise bhoomipujan for the proposed Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC)-Chunabhatti connector. However, the actual groundwork will commence only after monsoon.
Requesting anonymity, sources within the development authority informed that special focus and priority is being given to the 1.6km-long elevated project (bridge).
"In the last six months to one year, there have been only inauguration of projects that were constructed in the last so many years. Except Kherwadi flyover, no significant new project has been added wherein some construction can be witnessed. This is a good opportunity to showcase that the present state government has not only inaugurated projects but also started work on new ones for the benefit of Mumbaikars," said an MMRDA official.
In a fortnight, an executive committee meeting is likely to be held to award contract for the project worth Rs203 crore. Within days of the meeting and by August 25, bhoomipujan will be conducted at 'G' Block of BKC.
Senior officials had visited the project site at 'G' Block on Tuesday evening. They have been holding meetings and discussing about the arrangements for the bhoomipujan.
The bridge will be constructed between 'G' Block (behind Diamond Bourse) of BKC and Chunabhatti (near Somaiya Ground) bypassing Maharashtra Nature Park, LBS Road and the railway tracks. Railway authorities have given in-principle approval to the project, but a final clearance is pending.
Due to changes in design from cable-stayed to having a pillar on Mithi river, the project cost of this connector has come down from Rs261 crore to Rs203 crore.
The aim of the project is to improve connectivity of BKC for commuters and motorists travelling to the eastern suburbs. Scheduled to be complete after three years, it will reduce traffic congestion at Kalanagar and Sion-Dharavi Link Road. After the Santa Cruz-Chembur Link Road was opened, there has been some reduction in traffic on Sion-Dharavi Link Road and Kalanagar.
Due to improper traffic dispersal system, on every working day, the business district witnesses traffic snarls at Kalina, LBS Road, MIG Colony Road and Kalanagar.
