Taking Metro III a step closer to fruition, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) inked an agreement with project management consultants on Tuesday.

The consultant, Hong Kong-based AECOM Asia, will aid the MMRC in implementation of the 33.5km Colaba-Bandra-Seepz project, namely evaluating the bids, appointment of contractors, scrutiny and review of plans, equipment purchase, review of the physical work, and examining if the work confirms to quality, safety and environment norms. The consultants will also be responsible for completing the work and overseeing it.

Under AECOM's leadership, companies from France, Japan and the United States will work on the project's panel of consultants.

Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) commissioner UPS Madan, principal secretary (urban development) Nitin Kareer, MMRC managing director Ashwini Bhide, and AECOM officials were among those present.

The JAICA had set down norms regarding the appointment of a consultant while approving funding for the project. The consultants have been appointed through a process of international competitive bidding.

On May 15, the MMRC had appointed a consortium led by AECOM Asia, Hong Kong, in a joint venture with Padeco of Japan, Louis Berger Group Inc. of US and Egis Rail of France as the general consultants for Metro III corridor.

The consultant appointed will assist MMRC for varied works — evaluation of bids for civil work and assist in appointing contractors, review and proof checking of detailed designs, preparing tender design and documents for procurement of track work, rolling stock, system components, supervision of supply and installation, system integration, testing and commissioning of system components, supervise works and ensure safety, quality and environmental aspects.

"The general consultants will also finalise operation and maintenance manuals, among other things," said Ashwini Bhide, managing director of MMRC.
