A 32-year-old mechanic from Nallasopara went missing in December 2016 from Oman under mysterious circumstances. Nearly a month later, on January 25, the man's family was left shocked after they received a call from a 'Pakistani' national, informing them that the man 'is in jail'.

The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has now launched an investigation into the matter, while the family has sought help from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in the case.

Akrar Khan, a resident of Maharaja Co-operative Housing Society in Nallasopara's (West) Samel Pada, got married in May 2014. Two months later, he left for Muscat in Oman and was working there in a private company.

According to Khan's family, at 12:36 am on December 20, Khan, while chatting with his sister Hazra Siddiqui, 26 — also a Nallasopara resident — informed her through WhatsApp that he would be heading out to visit a bank. The family had not heard from him since.

"We tried to contact Akrar for three days, but our efforts went in vain. His phone has been out of reach since. On January 25, my sister's husband received a call via the internet from a caller who claimed to be a Pakistani. The caller said Akrar is in jail. The caller did not reveal his identity nor did he leave a number. He wasn't even fluent with Hindi," said Hazra.

A team of ATS officers visited Hazra's residence to record her statement. "We will investigate the matter further. We will also inform the state government about the incident for further procedure," said Suresh Yamgar, in-charge of Palghar ATS. After getting no response from the Indian Embassy in Oman, Hazra has written to External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj for help.
