The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) on Wednesday raised the charge of 'conflict of interest' against state tourism minister Jaikumar Rawal (BJP), in connection with the hill resort in Nandurbar.

NCP spokesperson Nawab Malik said that Rawal's company Toranmal Hill Resorts Pvt Ltd was operating the resort in Nandurbar district in Maharashtra, despite the company being blacklisted by Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) and de-registered by the Registrar of Companies.

It was one of the two lakh companies struck off by ROC for their alleged involvement in black money transactions in June 2017 after demonetization.

Malik said the company purchased five-acre land in Dondaicha (in Dhule district) last year. "As per land records, the company belonged to Jaykumar Rawal. This was a conflict of interest as Rawal is also the chairman of MTDC in his capacity as the Tourism Minister," he added.

Malik has called upon Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to sack Rawal from the ministry. He also informed that NCP will approach Lok Akyuta and also file a case against Rawal with the police, the Anti-Corruption Bureau and Enforcement Directorate.

Despite de-registration, the company continues to function and the hill resort was still accepting bookings. Malik informed that from 1998 to 2006, Rawal's company Toranmal Hill Resorts Private Ltd was given an MTDC resort on lease. The company did not pay the lease rent to MTDC, which in turn invoked provisions of the Eviction of Public Premises Act, in 2011, and sent a notice to the company. But MTDC officials were not allowed to do their work and were forcibly turned away.

However, Rawal has refuted allegations made by Malik, saying that he was not connected with Toranmal Hill Resort Pvt Ltd. "I was never the Director or a shareholder of the company. During my tenure as the Tourism Minister, I have not handled any matter in connection with the Toranmal Hill Resort Pvt Ltd. Neither has there been any misuse of power by me," he clarified.

Malik had last month accused Rawal of indulging in dubious land deals in Dhule district. Rawal had purchased a piece of land in his native Dhule district in 2012 even after the same land had been notified for acquisition for a thermal power project by the state government in 2009. The government later scrapped the multi-crore thermal project and instead proposed a solar power project.

Rawal has also denied the above charges and has threatened to file a defamation case against Malik.
