Tired of pothole-ridden roads and civic apathy to their pleas, residents of Milapnagar in Dombivli led a protest march to MIDC office and Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation's (KDMC) office on Friday morning.

Though MIDC officials offered them a temporary solution, the residents also walked up to KDMC office to ensure their demands met before the code of conduct comes into effect in the wake of civic elections.

Around 11am, nearly 250 residents led a morcha to MIDC (Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation) office in Dombivli. "Since the last five years we have been pleading to the MIDC to repair the roads, but they have done nothing. So protest was the only way to voice our demands," said Raju Nalawade, president of Milapnagar Residents Welfare Association. The residents also had majority of women from the association, led by president Varsha Mahadik.

The protestors were also joined by 50 school boys from Green English high school in Dombivli. "During the mini marathon held some months back, students from neighbouring schools had fallen into these potholes and suffered minor injuries. So even they joined us," said one of the residents.

The residents staged rasta roko for half an hour and then proceeded to MIDC office. "Shankar Jagtap, executive engineer from MIDC, said they are following up the matter with KDMC and will resolve the issue soon.

Since the residents felt that these were false promises, which they have heard in the past too, they proceeded to meet civic chief at the KDMC headquarters. "We have submitted our demands to an official and hope they look into it before the election code of conduct, else we will not vote in this elections," he warned. KDMC chief E Ravindran was unavailable for comments.
