The Government Railway Police (GRP) have solved the theft of a 4-month-old girl from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus within 24 hours. The cops managed to trace the woman thief with the help of an alert taxi driver, after scanning about 1,100 houses.

The accused, who was picked up from her Mankhurd home, has told the police that she desperately wanted a baby as she was unable to conceive.

According to GRP commissioner and IG Madhukar Pandey, a couple and their daughter from Haji Malang were waiting at CST on Thursday night to board a train to Hyderabad the next day. While the family went off to sleep, the parents realised on Friday morning that the infant was missing. They approached the cops at CST.

"We went through CCTV footage and found that a woman was involved in the crime. We then questioned taxi drivers from outside the station. One of the cabbies told us that he had dropped a woman carrying a child in Mankhurd," said a police officer.

A police team rushed to the suburb and began scanning houses at the spot mentioned by the taxi driver. They also learnt from the locals that a woman had thrown a party in the morning saying she had given birth to a baby girl. The locals helped the cops track down the accused.

"The woman has claimed that she committed the crime as she could not conceive. She said she had used cloth padding to tell her husband that she was pregnant. To ensure that her cover wasn't blow up, she even stayed with her parents. On Thursday night, she went to CST and stole the child," said a police officer.

However, the police are not believing her story and say there are several inconsistencies in it. "How is it possible her husband remained unaware of the fake pregnancy for nine months? Why did she come from Mankhurd at night to CST? If she was pregnant, how was the family convinced when she returned with a 4-month-old child? We are investigating whether her family members are also involved in this case."
