The Kalachowkie police on Saturday arrested a man on grounds of cruelty after he allegedly sprayed pesticide into his wife's mouth. Two of his relatives are also wanted in the case. According to the police, Sandesh Hadye, 30, a resident of Lalbaug, and his wife Sarika, 32, belong to different castes and had a love marriage five years ago against the wishes of Hadye's family. Since the day of marriage, the Sarika stayed in a room in Prabhadevi, where her husband used to visit in the evening.
As per Sarika, her in-laws used to regularly argue with her over the love marriage. On Saturday morning, Hadye told his wife to visit her in-laws' place in Lalbaug so that some solution can be derived to end the regular quarrel regarding their marriage, police said.
"Sarika reached her in-laws' place at around 9.30 am, where her husband and two other relatives from her in-laws' side were present. They again had an argument, after which Hadye allegedly sprayed pesticide in her mouth. The victim then managed to escape from the house and went to KEM Hospital," said an officer from Kalachowkie police station.
At the hospital, Sarika's statement was recorded and a complaint was registered under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 324 (voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 504 (intentional insult), 498A (husband or relative of husband of a woman subjecting her to cruelty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (common intention) of the Indian Penal Code.
"Following the complaint, a team of police officers went to Hadye's Lalbaug residence and seized the pesticide spray bottle allegedly used in the crime. Hadye was arrested later in the day. He was produced before the court, which remanded him to judicial custody," the officer said.
