A man who had kidnapped the 13-year-old son of a jeweller in Rajasthan, ran out of luck, and was arrested from Mumbai on Sunday night. The accused had printed a fake wedding card and had foxed the victim’s mother to hand over her son’s custody to him.

Rajasthan Police arrested Sajid Ghulam Mustafir Baig (35), and his girlfriend Halima Mandal (35), in the alleged crime.

According to the police, Baig, a native of Ramgarh in Sikar, Rajasthan, works in a construction firm in Mumbai. Baig had a huge loan to pay off and this apparently drove him to plan a kidnapping. Baig along with accomplice conspired to kidnap Dhruv, son of Ramgarh-based jeweller Lalit Poddar.

“Baig and his accomplice gathered details about Poddar and learnt that Lalit goes to his shop at 11 am every day, leaving behind his wife Parvati and Dhruv at home. Baig was also aware who all worked at Lalit’s shop,” said a senior inspector Ramesh Meena of Fatehpur Shekhawati police station in Ramgarh.

He added that Baig got his bogus wedding card printed and on May 15, and visted Lalit’s residence with his accomplice when he was at work.

“Baig met Parvati and told her that he is known to Lalit and had come to invite the family for his wedding. He then gave his wedding card to Parvati, who thought him to be her husband’s customer. Baig then told Parvati that he also wanted to invite Lalit’s nephew Ashwini who works at the shop. Parvati told Dhruv to show Ashwini’s residence to the person. Dhruv was kidnapped and taken to Mumbai,” Meena said.

“Baig then talked to Lalit via a conference call and demanded Rs 70 lakh ransom. On receipt of information, the suspects were nabbed with the help of Mumbai Police,” said Meena.

Additional Commissioner of Police KMM Prasanna confirmed that a team headed by inspector Mahesh Desai from Bandra unit along with the Rajasthan police managed to rescue the boy and nab kidnappers.

What was done

Baig had confined Dhruv at his girlfriend Halima’s Bandra residence and gave him sleeping pills and threatened to kill him. Baig was a smart operator but he ran out of luck. We are on the lookout for one more person who had helped Baig in the crime. Halima was also actively involved in the conspiracy,” said Rajasthan police officer Ramesh Meena.
