Marine Drive police on Saturday arrested a man who allegedly molested a 29-year-old model in a 5-star hotel in south Mumbai, stole valuables worth Rs 1.45 lakh and tried extorting from her.

The accused first called the victim on the pretext of audition, took her to a hotel room and allegedly made the victim term herself a call girl and recorded her delivery. He later told the victim to withdraw her case which she had filed against a well-known actress over a monetary dispute a few years ago.

The arrested person has been identified as Sudeep Biswas, a resident of Nerul in Navi Mumbai.

According to the police, complainant is a resident of Lokhandwala in Andheri (W). She has been a model since 2009 and got married in 2014. On April 19, the victim received a call from an unknown number and the caller identified himself as one Ravindra Kumar. He said that an audition was being done in a 5-star hotel at Marine Drive and that she was also shortlisted for the audition.

A man met the victim in the lobby of the hotel and told her to accompany him to the room where the 'audition' was being conducted. "The victim alleged that the man then told her that he was a policeman. He made the victim say that she was a call girl and recorded her delivery. He then molested the victim and robbed her valuables worth Rs 1.45 lakh, including her iPhone. He set the victim free before demanding Rs 50000, which the accused said should be given to him later," said an officer from Marine Drive police station.

On April 21, the victim approached the police and narrated her ordeal. The police then visited the hotel, made inquiries about the accused and learnt that he had checked out of the hotel the same day. The police also saw the CCTV footage of the day when the victim had met the accused.

On April 28, the victim received a call from an unknown number. "The caller claimed to be friend of a well-known actress and said that the act that had taken place with her in the hotel was planned. The caller threatened the victim by stating that if she did not withdraw the case she had filed against the actress in Andheri court in 2014 over a monetary dispute, then her recording will be shown to the judge, put on the Internet and she would be killed in a road accident. Or else, drugs will be planted in her car and to get her framed in a case. The victim then lodged a police complaint on April 29 in this regard," the officer said.

"On the basis of technical intelligence, Biswas was arrested from his residence. Biswas admitted of having committed the crime. We are yet to recover the stolen property and are verifying if his claims that he had committed the crime in connivance with his actress friend is true or not," the officer said, adding that Biswas has been arrested under sections 170 (impersonation), 354 (Assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 384 (extortion) and 385 (putting person in fear of injury in order to commit extortion) of Indian Penal Code.
