The Pydhonie police on Sunday arrested a man for allegedly kidnapping a seven-month-old girl. On Saturday, a labourer was sleeping with his wife and daughter on the footpath at Mohammad Ali Road in Pydhonie.

After a few hours, when the labourer's wife woke up, she realised that her daughter was missing. The couple then began searching for their child. They were helped by a biker to trace their child and get hold of the kidnapper.

The arrested person has been identified as Fareed Karim Baadshah Shaikh (25), a resident of the slums near Karnac Bridge.

According to the police, around 11.30pm on Saturday, complainant Javed Shaikh (30), was sleeping with his wife and daughter Shabana on the footpath. Around 1.20am, Shaikh's wife Reshma woke up and realised Shabana was missing. The couple then began searching for their child.

"While the couple was searching for Shabana, an unknown biker saw them and assured them of help. He then moved around Mohammad Ali Road and found a man carrying a child with him. Shaikh then identified the child as his daughter," said an officer from Pydhonie police station.

Meanwhile, as public had gathered at the spot, a police patrolling vehicle saw the mob and went there to inquire. The person who took away the child was then brought to the police station for questioning.

"We have booked Javed on charges of kidnapping and are probing his intention for kidnapping the girl," the officer said.
