The Colaba police have arrested a man for allegedly duping two youths on the pretext of providing them a job in the Indian Navy.

The arrested person has been identified as Vinod Vishnu Gaikwad, a resident of Titwala.

According to the police, the complainant in the case is a post-graduate Arts student. "The complainant and his Nashik-based friend had learnt that Gaikwad had got several youths employed in the Navy. The duo also wanted to join the Navy and hence contacted Gaikwad," said an officer from Colaba police station.

He added that on May 9, the complainant and his friend came to Mumbai and met Gaikwad. "Gaikwad told them that he can provide them jobs in the Navy and took Rs20,000 as commission from them. Later, he told them that their applications for jobs in the Navy have been submitted to the Navy office and these jobs would be provided soon," the officer said.

However, Gaikwad kept on asking for more money from the duo even after this, following which the duo got suspicious and informed the police about the said incident. The police then registered a case of cheating against Gaikwad and arrested him. Gaikwad was produced before a local court, which remanded him to police custody till Monday.

"We suspect that Gaikwad duped several job aspirants in a similar fashion, and are probing the matter further," the officer said.
