A 35-year-old man died in a fatal accident that took place at Vakola on Tuesday night. The arrested tanker driver has been identified as Haroon Mohammed Sahwan Khan (40).

According to the Vakola police, the deceased identified as Subhash Gore stayed in a small hut with his family, including two children and hailed from Nanded. He was working as a construction labourer and used to do small jobs to suffice his livelihood.

"Khan, a resident of Mahim, had visited Vakola to supply water in a building. The tanker was parked near Gore's residence. Gore went on to sleep while the tanker was parked at some distance. After getting his work done, Khan tried to start the truck but initially it did not start. After attempting several times, the vehicle started and Khan began to take a reverse unaware of the fact that Gore was sleeping. Gore was bleeding profusely and was rushed to VN Desai hospital where the doctors declared him dead due to critical injuries and excessive loss of blood, police said.

Khan was arrested by the police and was presented to the court where he was sentenced to judicial custody for 14 days.

A relative of Gore said, "It is really hard to believe that one of our members died in such a mishap. We demand strict punishment for the accused so that nobody else in the future try to repeat such act even by mistake."

"We have seized the vehicle. Khan's body was sent to Cooper Hospital for post-mortem and probing the matter further," said senior inspector, Mahadev Vavhale.
