Thane Crime Branch Unit 1 arrested the mastermind of Malwani hooch tragedy, which had claimed over 100 lives in 2015. The 39-year-old accused, who was absconding for two years, was finally nabbed from his residence in Indore.

Dharmendra Singh Shivbali Singh Tomar alias Sanjay Singh was arrested after a tip-off by an informer when the Shil Diaghar police was investigating a case of hooch den which was busted in 2016. Further investigations revealed Singh’s involvement in supplying methanol for producing hooch. Singh was running a business of scrap after the tragedy.

“Our informers were tracking the movements of Singh. We were confirmed that he was involved in providing harmful chemicals to hooch dens in Malwani which had led to death of over 100 persons. More than 120 people also fell ill after consuming the hooch,” said a Thane crime branch police officer.

Shil Diaghar police had registered a case under Section 328(causing hurt by means of poison, etc) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevant sections of the Bombay Prohibition Act. Param Bir Singh, Thane police Commissioner said, “After completing our interrogations, we will hand over the accused to Mumbai Crime Branch for further investigations.”

“After producing him in the court, he has been remanded in police custody up to 25 May,” added Singh.

The Malwani police had registered a case under Sections 302 (Punishment for murder), 307 (Attempt to murder), 326 (Voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 328 (Causing hurt by means of poison, etc), 114 (Abettor present when offence is committed), 109 (Punishment of abetment), 120B (Punishment of criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and under relevants sections of the Bombay Prohibition Act.
