Commuters of a Khopoli-CST-bound local were in for a shock on Tuesday evening when thick smoke began to rise from a luggage compartment. The incident was reported at 8pm.

The fire happened between Vikhroli and Ghatkopar railway stations on the Central line. According to Central Railway officials, the motorman was alerted about the fire in the luggage compartment next to the women’s compartment. Following this, the train was halted. Nobody was injured in the incident.

However, alarmed commuters began jumping off the train onto the tracks, in fear of the fire spreading to other compartments. Some even complained that the stop chain was not functioning despite people pulling it.

"The motormen and guard of the train used fire extinguisher to put off the blaze. It appears that a passenger was carrying some inflammable material but it is yet not clear how the fire occurred," the official said, adding that an inquiry was being conducted.

It took 22 minutes to extinguish the fire after which the train moved. Passengers were asked not to jump or leave the train as the situation was under control.

"One train was held up behind this local and around 8 30pm normal traffic was restored," said a CR official stating that they keep announcing on platforms as well as spread awareness about not carrying inflammable objects while travelling in the trains.
