Maharashtra: Kalyan man held for recruiting youths for Islamic State

The arrested man was identified as Rizwan Khan. According to sources, a case against Khan has already been registered with the Kerala in connection with conversion issues.

A man suspected of being instrumental in recruiting youths for terror outfit Islamic State (IS) was apprehended from his Kalyan residence on Friday night, after a joint operation by the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) and the Kerala police. Khan was produced before a local court in Mumbai on Saturday, which remanded him into transit custody of the Kerala police.

The arrested man was identified as Rizwan Khan. According to sources, a case against Khan has already been registered with the Kerala in connection with conversion issues.

On July 21, state ATS and Kerala police nabbed a man identified as Arshi Qureshi – associated with controversial preacher Zakir Naik's Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) – from his Navi Mumbai residence for his alleged links with the IS. He was arrested in connection with a case registered in Kochi on July 17. A local court in Navi Mumbai had then remanded Qureshi into Kerala police's transit remand till July 25.

The case against Khan was registered days after at least 21 youths from Kerala were reported missing and were suspected to have joined the IS. Khan's name had figured in the probe.

"Khan was grilled for a few days, after which he was placed under arrest on Friday night. Three more persons are under our scanner. We are trying to identify the persons who were reportedly brainwashed and converted by Qureshi and Khan," said a police officer.

Crackdown on IS in Maha

July 14: State ATS arrested Parbhani resident Nasir Bin Yafi Chaus allegedly for being in touch with IS members over social media. The suspected sympathiser had created at least 18 bogus accounts on social media, through which he was in touch with his handler in Syria, identified only as Farooq.

July 21: In a joint operation, state ATS and Kerala police conducted a raid in Navi Mumbai and picked up Qureshi from his Seawoods residence. Qureshi, who is associated with the IRF, was arrested after it was alleged that he was instrumental in forced conversion of youths.
