The Maharashtra Transport department has planned to crack a whip on pressure and shrill horns fitted in commercial vehicles as part of its ‘No Honking’ campaign.

Speaking to DNA, Principal Secretary, Transport department, Manoj Saunik said that most of these commercial vehicles including trucks, buses, and others visit the Regional Transport Offices (RTO) across the state for annual fitness checking. “There are already rules to check the horns but we will now begin ensuring that there is a stricter check and in case there are any pressure horns or shrill horns fitted it will be asked to be removed,” he said adding that their campaign was to ensure that there is a change in the mindset of people who honk without any reasons.

On Tuesday even anti-noise pollution activist and Convenor for Awaaz Foundation Sumaira Abdulali had a meeting with Saunik to discuss the campaign. “I had a long discussion with Saunik and appreciated that Transport department has begun a campaign.

Also after discussions, it was agreed that the RTO will begin an enforcement drive to remove shrill and loud horns from vehicles and will support Awaaz Foundation’s anti-honking campaigns,” she said adding that it was extremely important that awareness and enforcement are carried out together.
