The roads of Vishwabharati Society and Andheri Society area in Andheri (W) will soon be lit up with 25-advance street lights, soon after the Mumbai polls.

According to residents, the lights would be of a better design and higher quality as compared to the existing street lights, some of which are not even working.

According to BMC sources, the lights would be installed as a pilot project in the area, and if found feasible, it would be set up across the city.

The project will be funded by a corporate organisation as part of its corporate social responsibility.

These societies are right next to some slums and the roads are poorly lit. "In the last couple of days, there had been a significant rise in chain-snatching incidents," said Kushang Patel, a member of Andheri Welfare Residents Association, adding that he hopes criminal activities will go down after the installation of such lights.

Prashant Mavani, a member of Juhu Lane Residents Association, said his association members are delighted that their efforts will soon see the light of the day. "Our association had sent an affidavit to the BMC, mentioning that we are ready to undertake the maintenance cost of these street lights," said Mavani. (dna has a copy of the affidavit)

Mavani was also the convenor of the citizens' forum that had carried out a survey in Andheri and at a few select places and found the level of illumination in some areas was less than half of what was required.
According to Mavani, BJP corporator Ameet Satam, had been instrumental in kick starting the project. "He played an important role in this. After we approached him, he took the matter to the civic authorities," said Mavani.

In January, Satam was on a hunger strike for eight days, to press for better street lighting. He had ended his fast after the city's civic chief committed to illuminate more streets.

"I am hopeful that following the pilot project, the civic administration would put such advanced street lights across the city," Satam said.
