The suburban collector's office on Thursday sent a team to seal BEST's Malvani bus depot on the 'non-payment' of land tax of over Rs 2 crores to the latter's office. However the matter was resolved for the moment after BEST general manager Jagdish Patil spoke to suburban collector Deependra Singh Kushwaha. Speaking to DNA, Patil said, "There is a dispute between the BEST and the collector's office over the payment of land tax. While the collector's records show that we have not paid tax on the land on which Malwani bus depot stands, our records show that we paid the tax way back in 1996 to Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA). In 1996 the land belonged to MHADA and it was handed over to us. And we paid the tax accordingly.

However the collector's office is of the contention that the land tax must be paid to the collectorate." Patil said that a team from the BEST would be going to the collector's office on Friday to explain the records in possession with BEST. "For the moment there is no seal on the depot because we have asked for a day's time," said Patil. Speaking to DNA, Kushwaha said that the sealing had been postponed for now so that BEST could put forward its case. "Our intention is not to trouble any agency which is into public service for example BEST. But what the tehsil office was duing was just due process of the law because in our records various taxes on the land is pending," said Kushwaha.

However for the moment it is not known what happens to the bus operations from Malvani depot in case it is sealed. Kushwaha just said that he would have to look into the matter. "Depends on what is the kind of operations that are being conducted from a particular premises that is sealed," is all Kushwaha said.
