Kurla may not be synonymous with Christmas in the city, but not for these residents. The Old Kurla Christian Village Citizens Forum will be organising a carnival on Sunday to mark the advent of Christmas in a way that promotes peace, goodwill and harmony among all the residents there.

Christmas carols, music, games and the Christmas delicacies will be major draws at the carnival. In its second year, the carnival will have people from diverse groups participating. “The Carnival marks the advent of the Christmas season. The celebrations include a float that will be taken around from one place to another. This year we have called rappers like Raja Kumari of Grammy nomination fame, and popular bands like Bombay Bassment will perform. The festival as such will start with carol singing at Kohinoor City,” said Anita Shetty, president of the forum.

The carnival, which will have around 4,000 participants in Christmas caps and fancy dresses, will move from Kohinoor City to Don Bosco Technical, Naupada Premier Road and will culminate at the Holy Cross Church in Kurla. “Though the Carnival will be for one day, we look to have the Christmas celebrations on and off till January 8,” added Shetty.

The group also looks forward to a Christmas crib before Christmas Day, which they claim to be the biggest in city. “We start making that a week or ten days before Christmas. It is around 20 by 30 feet,” said Sujamma Sanghi, one of the participants.

“It is good to have celebrations like these. It is a good way for our children to understand what the festival is all about instead of sitting at home,” said Sanghi.

Participants make it a point to carry home-made delicacies that can be given to those who come to enjoy the carnival.
