After the recent Hiranandani hospital kidney racket bust, the police have sent important files regarding at least nine kidney transplants to health experts for their review and opinion. Sources said the experts have been asked to thoroughly scrutinise these files to identify, if any, irregularities.
On July 14, the Powai police had arrested five doctors for their suspected role in the scam. Later, an Andheri court granted all of them bail. Sources, however, said this was just the tip of the iceberg and many more people might be involved in such malpractices. So now the police are looking at old kidney transplant cases to identify malpractices.
According to sources, some files have been sent to the health department officials for their opinion. It couldn't be ascertained which hospitals these files belonged to. Meanwhile, an inquiry committee appointed by the Directorate of Health Services (DHS) has submitted its final report on the kidney racket to the health department.
In India, kidney transplant is performed under the Transplant of Human Organs Act-1994, which was amended in 2014. According to the law, if donor and recipient are close relatives, they need to take permission from a hospital-level committee. If they are extended relatives, from outside the state or country, or if it is a case of swap transplant, such cases go to the State Authorisation Committee for permission.
Cops nab one
The Azad Maidan police on Friday nabbed a person believed to be a kingpin of a kidney racket. Allegedly, Shiva (45) has been involved in several illegal kidney harvesting cases for the last one decade. According to the police, Shiva played an active role in forging of the documents required during transplants. "We have sent the accused into the crime branch custody, where further investigation related to the case will be done. During interrogation, the accused did not reveal any significant details pertaining to the case," an Azad Maidan police officer said.
