If Wankhede stadium can be sanitised for aedes mosquito, which spreads dengue, why not Parel's KEM hospital, asked Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) after another resident doctor contracted the disease and had to be shifted to PD Hinduja Hospital in a critical condition.

According to MARD representatives, the hostel maintenance and repair work has still not been completed to stop aedes mosquito breeding. In a notice dated October 27 to the KEM administration (of which dna has a copy), BMC's pest control officer had asked them to cover one of the overhead tanks and two other probable breeding spots. But MARD members said nothing has been done so far to comply with these suggestions.

The representatives from KEM hospital have also pointed out serious lacunae in the hospital's health care services, which they had to face during Dr Shruti Khobragade's admission in medicine ICU (MICU), before she was transferred to Hinduja hospital and succumbed to the disease on October 26.

In a strongly-worded letter, of which dna has a copy, to the dean of KEM hospital, MARD said there was lack of expert opinion in Khobragade's case. The letter also mentions that the monitoring system in the ICU was not functioning, a common problem faced by doctors in ICU regularly.

"During Dr Khobragade's admission, we found that the standard monitoring system was not available, there was no transfusion pump that gives an ICU patient a fixed dose of medicine, and there was no proper nursing care. To top it, the basic investigation report wasn't provided on time and there was discrepancy in the blood report prepared by the hospital's pathology department and the one we got from a private lab," said one of the resident doctors.

Dean Dr Shubhangi Parker strongly opposed MARD's accusations. "We have the best treatment protocol and are one of the busiest hospitals in city. Our MICU runs full all the time. We may not have good walls but have very good doctors, and many patients recover soon and are discharged. It is sad that we lost Dr Shruti Khobragade, but that shouldn't become a reason to question our treatment protocol." Municipal commissioner Sitaram Kunte said so far they have not received any complaints on KEM hospital's ICU care. "If the criticism is fair, I will look into the matter," he added.
