Kamala Mills Fire: Two Assistant Municipal Commissioners quizzed

As on Friday, all the nine officers have denied being guilty of the allegations, however, the cross-examination will be an important step of the inquiry.

Out the 12 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) officers who were found guilty in the inquiry report of the Kamala Mills fire, six of the officers gave their statements on Friday. Among the six officers were two assistant municipal commissioners namely Prashant Sapkale and Bhagrashree Kapse who gave their oral deposition against the charge sheet filed against them. Both Sapkale and Kapse are the former ward officers of G-North ward of BMC- where the Kamala Mills falls. The inquiry is been headed by Additional Municipal Commissioner, Vijay Singhal.

Prashant Sapkale was the ward officer of G-North ward when on December 29, 2017 the Kamala Mills fire incident took place in which 14 people died. Sapkale was on immediate basis transferred to K-East ward. While. Bhagyashree Kapse is currently ward officer for N-ward.

“There are 12 officers found guilty of which 3 are already behind bars. For the 3 officers depositions were taken on Tuesday and the rest 6 officers gave their statements on Friday. The cross-examination will take place next week”, Additional Municipal Commissioner, Vijay Singhal told DNA.

As on Friday, all the nine officers have denied being guilty of the allegations, however, the cross-examination will be an important step of the inquiry.

Fourteen people were killed when fire engulfed two adjoining rooftop pubs—Mojo’s Bistro and 1Above—in Kamala Mills compound on December 29, 2017.Immediately after the fire incident, charge sheets and suspension orders were served to five officials—designated officer Madhukar Shelar, sub-engineer Dinesh Mahale, junior engineer Dhanraj Shinde, medical officer health Satish Badgire and assistant divisional fire officer S S Shinde—for dereliction of duty. Later, following municipal commissioner Ajoy Mehta’s report into the blaze, seven other officers were found guilty and served charge sheets.
