With the new Maharashtra Coastal Zone Management Authority (MCZMA) being reconstituted, the project of constructing a maze of flyovers at Kalanagar is likely to get some impetus as the project did not move ahead for want of Coastal Regulation Zone clearance.

"Now that MCZMA committee has been reconstituted, we are looking forward to getting clearance for Kalangar flyovers project," said UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), "The proposal should come up in the first meeting of MCZMA," Madan added.

A meeting of MCZMA is likely to be held later this month.

The aim of the development authority is to have four flyovers and a road to clear the daily rush hour traffic chaos at the entrance of Bandra Kurla Complex. "A survey conducted has revealed that every hour, on an average more than 12,000 cars crowd the BKC junction and this traffic problem will be saved by constructing four flyovers and a road," said Dilip Kawathkar, MMRDA spokesperson.

There will be a flyover each to reach the Bandra Worli Sea Link from BKC and to BKC from the Bandra Worli Sea Link. The total length of these two two-lane flyovers is 1,888 metres.

The flyover running from Dharavi towards Western Express Highway (WEH) will join the flyover running from BKC at the second level, and there will be a three-lane flyover connecting the flyover reaching WEH. This flyover is 2,920 meters long.

There will also be a 12-feet wide road running through the government land to streamline the traffic from Dharavi to Bandra Worli Sea Link. The estimated cost of the project is Rs227 crore.
Earlier this year, MMRDA had submitted revised maps for the project to get green clearance for the project. Thereafter, due to expiry of the term of the MCZMA the process had paused.
