In the coming three years you can zip on to Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL) from Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) skipping the bottlenecks at Kalanagar junction as Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has started construction work on the 1.6-km-long flyover connecting the junction near Family Court in BKC with BWSL.

"The Traffic Police Department has given its No Objection Certificate (NOC) for construction of the flyover," an MMRDA official said.

The piling work for the construction started last week along with barricades being installed at several stretches. "The work has started from inside a plot owned by the Public Works Department (PWD) and we will come slowly on to the main junction of Kalanagar after the pier for DN Nagar-BKC Metro-2B comes up," added the official.

Construction of this flyover is part of MMRDA's plan to decongest Kalanagar junction by building a maze of two flyovers connecting BKC with BWSL and Dharavi. However, the construction was stuck due to the proposed Metro-2B. The BKC arm of BKC-BWSL flyover was clashing with alignment of Metro-2B at BKC, after which, MMRDA had to tweak alignment of the flyover.

"We tweaked certain designs and now the flyover will be below the Metro pier. So once the Metro-2B pier work is done at that particular stretch, we will work one level below the Metro pier. Also, a few lanes will be occupied for the construction of flyover and the Metro-2B in the coming days," the MMRDA official said.

As of today, the stretch between Kalanagar and BKC witnesses motorists plying at a crawling pace, resulting in jams during peak hours due to traffic multiplying from five directions including Dharavi T-junction, BWSL, WEH (Western Express Highway), Kalanagar and BKC.

More than 12,000 cars pass through Kalanagar junction, compelling the authority to plan construction of flyovers to decongest it.

MMRDA has also suggested multinational and national companies to stagger their official work hours to avoid traffic congestion during the construction work in BKC. In the first phase, there will be a flyover from BKC to BWSL and the other from BKC to Dharavi.
