By announcing that exams would be held in July for those who failed their SSC board exams this year, the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education has made an attempt to save the students' year. But education and health experts have a mixed reaction to the decision. Experts say that the board's July exams will be of benefit, but only to those students who have failed in one or two subjects. For those students who have failed in more subjects, the workload and stress may be too much to handle; the July exams for repeaters are just a month away, and it will be a tough task for students to clear all their exams at such short notice, say experts.

Former Board Secretary, Basanti Roy, said, "The pass percentage has gone up considerably and the number of failed students has come down. This will be a manageable job for the board, and they have been thinking about having the July exams for many years now. The July exams will definitely be of advantage to students who have got ATKT, but as for those who failed in more subjects, it will be a tough task for them to clear the exams at such short notice."

Echoing Roy's sentiments, Dr Aranha Francesca, Head of English Department at the General Education Academy, Chembur said, "This is good news for students, but only for those who failed in one or two subjects. The ones who failed in more subjects will get stressed appearing in July. This information should have been provided by board soon after the SSC exams got over. At least students would have started preparing for the subjects which they were weak in."

Students who wish to give their exams in July without late fees will have to submit their exam forms between June 15 to 23. By paying the late fees, they can submit the exam form between June 24 to 27. The Mumbai Divisional Board has not yet fixed the date on which the exam will begin. The state board will soon declare the time-table.

Dr. Harish Shetty, psychiatrist at LH Hiranandani Hospital, said, "The decision has put a lot of stress not only on students but even on the system. Parents need to learn to lose one year. The issue is about passing with dignity. Having examinations in October gave students adequate time to prepare for their exams."
