The gynaecology department of JJ Hospital has successfully managed to deliver 64 HIV-free babies in the past three years. Since May 2015, the department has attained 100 per cent success in delivering HIV-free babies from 64 HIV-affected mothers.

As per the Right To Information data received by RTI activist, Chetan Kothari, all 64 HIV-affected mothers were administered the new three-tablet regime during their pregnancy. The new three-drug regime has given hope to HIV-affected women since there is a possibility of their child being born HIV-free. The government had introduced the new single tablet which has a combination of three drugs namely — Tenofovir, Lamivudine and Efavirenz.

According to the data received from JJ Hospital, in the year 2015, 31 new born babies were born to HIV-infected mothers as HIV negative. While in 2016 the number was 24 and till April 2017, nine babies were born with HIV negative. "It is extremely important to spread awareness regarding this matter so that the message —transmission of HIV from mother to baby is 100 per cent preventable — can be reached out to several other people in the society," said RTI activist Chetan Kothari.

TP Lahane, the dean of JJ Hospital, said, "It's been more than four years since we started giving the three-drug regime to HIV-affected mothers. This drug is proving to be successful and providing great results. Since five years, till date, more than 1,000 children have been delivered as HIV negative even if their mother has been suffering from HIV."
