Probe into the July 11, 2006, Mumbai serial train blasts has revealed that one of the 12 convicted in the case on Friday, Sohail Shaikh, was given an offer by Pakistan's spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to work as an agent for it. The ISI had told Sohail to provide them with information about police officers, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and army camps. Sohail, however, chose to work with Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), sources said.

According to police sources, in September 2002, one of the main accused in the case Faisal Shaikh, who too was convicted, had sent the Pune resident to Tehran. From Tehran, Sohail went to Pasargad in Iran, and then to Zaaydan. In Zaaydan, he stayed in Abuzar Hotel, where he met one Abdul Rehman, who helped him cross into Pakistan. Rehman then got Sohail to meet with LeT commander Azam Cheema in Bahawalpur. There, Sohail also met a few ISI officials.

After staying there for a few days, he left for Lahore, where he visited the ISI office. There, ISI officials made inquiries with him and sent him to their Rawalpindi office. At Rawalpindi, the ISI tried to convince Sohail to work for it. He was then sent back to Lahore, sources said.

"At Lahore, ISI officials met Sohail and asked him to get details of police officers, BARC and army camps in Mumbai, Goa and Gujarat. They also provided him with an email ID on which he was expected to send details. For three to four days, the officials continued trying to lure Sohail," said a police officer associated with the blast probe.

Later, Sohail was sent to Cheema's Bahawalpur bungalow. "Cheema had told Sohail that the ISI and LeT are organisations that compliment each other's work and asked Sohail with which organisation he wanted to join. Sohail made it clear that he wanted to work with LeT, after which Cheema told him that he would have to work under Faisal in India," the officer said.

Cheema also sent him for a two-day weapon handling training session in Bahawalpur. He then handed him over to Rehman, who again helped him cross into Pakistan and enter Zaaydan. Sohail was given back his passport and an air ticket, and from Tehran he returned to India.
