Almost 10 days after he was arrested, alleged diamond thief and Israel national Sheron Tamaji Tamoj, 62, was granted bail on Rs 25,000 by the holiday court in Bandra on Thursday. The Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police had arrested Tamoj on October 14 on charges of stealing two pieces of diamond from the office of a diamond merchant in BKC in July.

He was then produced before a court which sent him to police custody till October 18. On being produced again after the end of police custody, the court sent him to judicial custody for 15 days. However, Tamoj applied for bail and was produced before the Bandra holiday court on Thursday.

"Tamoj was produced before the holiday court in Bandra and was granted bail on Rs 25,000 surety," said Kundalik Nigade, senior inspector, BKC police station.

Immediately after his release, Tamoj's advocate Rajesh Srivastava said, "My client was arrested on false charges due to business rivalry. If he had really stolen the diamonds, why would he have come back to Mumbai from Belgium?"

According to the police, the complainant had approached the police in July claiming that two pieces of diamond had been stolen from his BKC office. Following the complaint, the police started their investigation during which they found that Tamoj had visited the diamond merchant's office on the afternoon of July 16. The police in their remand application claimed that when they scrutinised the CCTV footages, it became clear to them that Tamoj had reportedly slipped two diamonds in his bag before leaving the complainant's office.

Further investigations revealed that Tamoj had left the country on the same night and flown to Brussels. The BKC police immediately put out a look-out notice for Tamoj.

On October 14, Tamoj flew back into Mumbai and was intercepted at the Mumbai international airport following the look-out notice. The BKC police put him under arrest immediately.

Tamoj's interrogation revealed that he had reportedly sold the diamonds to a friend in Brussels. In their remand application, the police informed the court that Tamoj had admitted that he had splurged all the money on gambling in a casino in Brussels.

During questioning, Tamoj had revealed that he had visited several countries like China, Germany, America, Georgia and India. The police also informed the court that they suspected Tamoj was an international criminal.
