The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed all commercial establishments in the city to set up gas leakage detectors on their premises to prevent outbreak of fire.

In light of the fire at Bhanu sweetmeat shop in Saki Naka, which claimed 12 lives, the BMC has issued guidelines to use different types of fuel in commercial establishments, based on a detailed discussion with the fire department. The civic body has also made available these guidelines on its official website.

Various types of fuel like LPG cylinders, piped natural gas, electrical appliances, kerosene, diesel, coal and wood are used in commercial units for manufacturing foot items. However, the commercial units have to follow Fire Codified Requirements to prevent any mishap. "We have put these rules and the instructions on the website of MCGM," said an official from the Shop and Establishment department of BMC.

As per the direction, the BMC has made it mandatory for distributors as well as consumers to ensure that there is no leakage from the cylinders. Apart from keeping LPG cylinders in open space, the civic body also warned that possessing more than permissible number of cylinders will attract penalty as well as seizure of cylinders.

Now, while renewing the business licence, the gas connection must be verified by an authorised technician, and should be submitted to the Medical Health Officer (MoH) of the BMC.

The BMC has also made it clear that the commercial units must store only permitted amount of fuel like coal, wood, diesel or furnace oil.

Meanwhile, the BMC is continuing with the crackdown on LPG cylinders procured illegally at eateries across the city. The B ward of BMC has so far seized around 40 cylinders from various roadside eateries as part of the crackdown. "The drive against illegal cylinders is a continuous process. But, after Saki Naka incident, we have intensified the crackdown," said an official from the B ward.
