The information commission has asked to provide CCTV footage to a man who spent over 20 days in custody on charges of allegedly giving fake notes to a person to be deposited in the bank during notebandi.

The order of providing CCTV footage of the bank and the police station where the man was allegedly tortured was given to the police by Ajit Kumar Jain, chief information commissioner, on December 18 on Prabhunath Goyal's application.

Goyal, a resident of Chembur, was arrested in 2016 on charges of giving 93 fake notes of Rs 1,000 to Punjab and Maharashtra Co-operative Bank. "I had actually given Rs 1 lakh to someone to be deposited in the bank during notebandi. They were in notes of Rs 1000. The bank said that 93 notes were fake. I went to the bank to say that I had given them and stood by it. However, the bank manager of Punjab and Maharashtra Co-Operaive Bank would not listen," said Goyal who trades in footwear.

Goyal added, "The Pydhonie police took me to the station and tortured me. They beat me up. I was in police custody for 12 days and spent as much time in judicial custody. The police even floated a theory in the papers that I was on the run when they caught me. I have filed a defamation case against them and wanted the CCTV footage. One of the female police officers repeatedly hit me. The police station CCTV footage is to prove that I was beaten and bank footage to prove that I was present at the bank and did not run away."

The police earlier denied giving him information stating that the case is under investigation. "When it had reached first appeal stage, RBI had stated that the notes were fine and even the court gave me a clean chit. However, the first appellate authority did not give order in my favour."
