The Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctor (MARD) has written a letter to the ministry of health and family welfare with the suggestion of increasing the student-teacher ratio. Mard is of the opinion that by increasing the number of students per teacher the country will get more specialty doctors.

As per the Medical Council of India (MCI) records, there are 9.29 lakh doctors registered in the Indian Medical Register as on March 31, 2014. Assuming the availability of 80% of them, it is estimated that around 7.4 lakh doctors are actually available for active services. This results in a poor of doctor–patient ratio which is 1:1674 against the WHO norm of 1:1000.

Recently, the ministry for health and family welfare had taken steps in order to meet the shortage of doctors and the ratio of teachers to students had been revised from 1:1 to 1:2 for all MD/MS disciplines and 1:1 to 1:3 in subjects of anaesthesiology, forensic medicine, radiotherapy, medical oncology and surgical oncology. Enhancement of age limit for appointment/extension/re-employment against posts of teachers/dean/principal/director in medical colleges from 65-70 years.

"We applaud the government move as some specialty branches have already increased the teacher student ratio. But we want the government to also increase seats in branches like general surgery, gynaecology, pediatrics, orthopedics, general medicine, pulmonary medicine, radiology, cardiology, urology and neurosurgery. Through our letter, we have requested JP Nadda, minister of health and family planing, to look into our demand," said Dr Sagar Mundada, president, MARD.

The Union government has also expressed its readiness for relaxation in the norms for setting up of a medical college in terms of requirement for land, faculty, staff, bed/bed strength and other infrastructure and strengthening of state government medical colleges for starting new PG courses/increase of PG seats with fund sharing between the Central and state governments in the ratio of 75:25.
