IIT-B remains favourite with JEE toppers

Over 50% of students among the top 100 rankers at JEE have chosen IIT Bombay for engineering this year, figures released at the end of first allocation round reveal. A total of 53 students from the top 100 and 36 of the top 50 students secured their seat at IIT-B in the first round of admissions that concluded on Tuesday.

The number, however, seems to have gone down as compared to that of 2016 wherein 67 of the top 100 rank holders had taken admission in the institute.

“While a total of 75 girls confirmed their admissions at various courses in the institute this year, the number is expected to go up to 90. Among the top 36 students who joined IIT B, 3 are girls,” said an institute spokesperson on Wednesday.

Of the 929 seats at IIT Bombay, only 14 seats remained vacant at the end of the first round with the remaining students having confirmed their allocations. This year, there will be seven admission rounds for IITs  conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) which also conducts admissions to IIITs, NITs and government funded engineering institutes in the country. Of the total 36,208 seats allotted in the first round, 29,415 students have accepted their seats, leaving 6,799 vacant. Close to 400 seats at the various IITs remained vacant at the end of first round.
