Iconic cafe Madras reopens snacks store, doubles the variety

Cafe Madras located in Matunga was built in 1940 by Kamath's grandfather. Devavrat and his elder brother Jaiprakash run the iconic restaurant along with their father, in the bylane of Bhaudaji road.

Six months after the wait, Cafe Madras in Matunga has re-opened its small food store called "The shop at Cafe Madras" outside the restaurant for food lovers.

The store which earlier displayed close to 25 varieties of snacks now has atleast 60 different kind of snacks for its customers. On the re-opening, Devavrat Kamath, owner of Cafe Madras, said "We started this small food store eight years ago to sell our range of packaged snacks. There were hardly 25 varieties of products including pickles, banana chips, chakkali to name a few. Six months ago we closed it down and re-opened it in mid-Septmber with approximately 60 different types of dry snacks, no oil and no added preservative pickles, various chips, coffee powder, and masalas to meet the increasing demand."

"The new store is slightly bigger and the product range is chosen after much research. Most of the products are pre-dominantly South Indian. Earlier we did not have enough space to increase the production. Through the shop, we have additionally created indirect employment and over ten groups are working on the increased variety to meet the customers demand."

Cafe Madras marked their 75th anniversary by surprising food lovers last year and have something planned this year as well for their customers.

Hinting about the surprise, Kamath, said "We are in the process of creating another platform for fresh food and products which are tasty and deserve to reach the people. The range has been chosen specifically by us on the parameters of great balanced food."

The new platform will have food products not only from South India but from various parts of the country as well.
