Having won the women's half marathon at the Mumbai Marathon in 2010, one wouldn't expect Jayashree Borge to break much sweat during the 2016 dna iCan Women's Half Marathon held in the city on Sunday. It was the same result for the Kolhapur resident as she lived up to her top billing by being the first to cross the finishing line.

Clocking 1:15:4, Borge, who is stationed with the Maharashtra State Police in Kolhapur as an assistant sub-inspector, said she could have finished faster had there not been a slight delay in the start of the race. "I did finish four minutes ahead of the second-placed athlete (Saigeeta Naik who is also in the Maharashtra State Police in Kohlapur), but you always feel you can do better. By the time it was 7am, the heat became a huge factor towards the end of the run. But I'm glad I won," said the 26-year-old who joined the department as a constable in 2011.

Despite another feather in her cap, it's not the marathon that is on Borge's priority list. She chooses to run the 5,000m and 10,000m when it comes to national tournaments for Maharashtra, but it's the 3,000m steeplechase she has her eyes set on.

"Running a 3,000m steeplechase is as exhausting as a 21-km marathon. I'm preparing myself for the national qualifiers to be held in May and June so that I'm in with a shout for the Rio Olympics. There's a lot of time before now and May and I'm keeping myself in shape ahead of those crucial months. It's also important not to run too much," added Borge, who was an absentee from this year's Mumbai Marathon.
