Coming on the heels of a five-day long strike by overworked resident doctors across public hospitals in the state, the healthcare budget was bound to have been closely scrutinised. While the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has cut down on the proposed spending, reducing it to Rs 3,311.73 crore in 2017-18 from Rs 3,693 crore in 2016-17, healthcare in peripheral areas has received attention.

In an effort to reduce the load on tertiary hospitals, the BMC is starting a new project called ‘Aapli Chikitsa’, as a part of which basic and advanced pathological tests will be offered at dispensaries, maternity homes, and specialised and peripheral hospitals.

This will ensure that a patient’s visits to the major hospitals are minimised.

Work will also begin on the Kasturba Cross Road Hospital in Borivli (W) and tenders will be floated for redevelopment of MT Agarwal Hospital in Mulund, Bhagwati Hospital in Borivli and Centenary Hospital in Govandi. With the patient population increasing dramatically over the past few years, health experts consistently stressed on the need to move health services outside of the island city to reach out to more people, and the policy seems to be addressing the same.

Technology will also be put to use to connect experts at KEM, Sion, Nair and Cooper hospitals, so that expert opinions can be passed on through video conferencing to doctors at peripheral hospitals.
