Haj pilgrimage to cost you more from this year

Performing Haj just got dearer by Rs21,028. The increase is due to hike in airfare, baggage cost and foreign exchange rates of Rupee with Saudi Riyal.

There are two categories for application – Green and Azizia. Last year, pilgrims from Mumbai had to pay Rs1,61,777 under Azizia, which is now increased by Rs18,973 to Rs1,80,750.

Whereas, Green category is for Rs2,13,500 as compared to Rs1,92,472 last year. The hike is by Rs21,028.

As per the details available, there has been an increase in airfare by around Rs7,000 and standard baggage charges has shot up by around Rs5,000.

Even the Saudi Riyal exchanged with Indian Rupee has been on a higher side due to fall in the value of the Rupee. Last year, the exchange rate for Saudi Riyal was Rs16.42, this year it is dearer and is for Rs17.51.

This year, Haj fees is highest in Delhi at Rs2,15,060 (Green category) while cheapest at Aurangabad, Indore, Bhopal and Ranchi for Rs2,11,900. "The differences in the rates for each city are due to variations in taxes or fees levied by each airports of India. Airports in Delhi and Mumbai have been modernised under the Public-Private Partnership model leading to escalation in airport taxation and fees," said an official.
