Seven members of the slum rehabilitation authority (SRA) housing society near Shivaji Nagar have been booked by Govandi police for driving their constable, 46-year-old Kamlakar Dhamnaskar to commit suicide. Police informed that these seven had refused ownership to Dhamnaskar of a redeveloped flat which he inherited from his deceased mother, as it was locked in a dispute with his sister. Dhamnaskar was found in the water below the

Vashi creek bridge on Sunday morning after he failed to return home from his shift the previous morning.

According to Govandi police, Dhamnaskar's mother was entitled to a flat under the SRA scheme at Shivaji Nagar. However, she passed away few months ago, after which Dhamnaskar became the inheritor of the flat by default.

There arose a dispute between him and his sister as she had withheld an NOC from her side, which did not allow Dhamnaskar to take possession of the flat.

Senior inspector, Khanderao Vidhate said: "The seven society members had also been refusing to hand over the house keys to him. A complaint against the committee members had been filed by his wife Asha on Thursday, on the basis of which we lodged an FIR."

The group members have been identified as Suryakant Wadekar, Gangaram Mundekar, Amit Madhurkar, Anant Raut, Bharat Raut, Jagdish Pawar and Mohan Patil. They have been charged under IPC Section 306 (abetment to suicide).

Another officer informed: "We have not made any arrests so far. The role of his sister is still being investigated to decide what action to take."

Dhamnaskar, a resident of Muktai Nagar near Govandi, allegedly jumped off the bridge last Saturday. Local fishermen found his body along the Vashi coast on Sunday morning, after which the Vashi police was informed.

Dhamnaskar's identity was established with the help of a police ID card in his pocket. The Vashi police registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR), and the case was subsequently transferred to the Govandi police for further investigation.
