The sitting area at the north end of Girgaum Chowpatty will soon be converted into a viewing gallery, which can accommodate at least 200 people at a time. The gallery, located near the police chowki, is at a slope and the slope will be structured with steps, giving it an amphitheater look. “The visitors can sit on the steps to have an unobstructed view of the queen’s necklace. The objective is to accommodate more people,” said a civic officer.

“The design will be soon sent to heritage committee for approval. The consultant is carrying out a geo-technical survey of Chowpatty after which the proposal will be ready for further approval. The upgradation of the viewing gallery is part of the Marine Drive precinct development project,” said Assistant Municipal Commissioner (D ward), Vishwas Mote.

The BMC will retain the existing structure but the nearby area and the slope towards the seashore will be upgraded and will have steps. This will accommodate more people at a time. The gallery will also have landscapes, new paver blocks and more benches. The heritage pole at the gallery will also be restored.

As visitors have to cross the busy signal at Tambe chowk to reach the gallery, the BMC is also in talks with traffic police for better crossing arrangements for the pedestrians. The junction chowk also has various poles like for CCTVs and signals. So as to give a better and spacious look, the BMC and traffic police is also considering to make a uni-pole where all utilities will be at one pole.
