One look at Girgaum's Holi celebration reveals the power of a film in influencing the masses. Taking a cue from Akshay Kumar starrer Padman, Amhi Girgavkar, a group of enthusiasts from Girgaum, celebrated Holi by demonstrating how to use a sanitary pad disposal machine.

The group will be installing five such disposal machines in the area, including at public places such as secondary schools, traffic signals, and other busy localities.

Amhi Girgavkar, a group of 762 Girgaum residents, teamed up with the Chira Bazar Tadwadi Holikotsav Mandal to celebrate this Holi with a difference.

Gaurav Sagvekar, president of Amhi Girgavkar, informed DNA that Tadwadi has been celebrating Holi since 1906, and this year marks the 112th anniversary. Every year, they put up hoardings on various social issues. This year they made sanitary napkin disposal their cause.

Sagvekar claimed sanitary napkins are usually randomly discarded in waste bins, which chokes sewage lines. And, since this issue concerns 3 million women in Mumbai, they deemed it important to raise awareness on this issue and provide a solution for the same, too.

Mumbai's Deputy Mayor Hemangi Worlikar, who was present at the venue, said BMC is already planning to install sanitary napkins vending and disposal machines at secondary schools, public toilets, and other public places.

Nilesh Kuwar, the manufacturer of the disposal machine informed that the disposal of one sanitary napkin takes about 3 to 5 minutes, and only a gram of ash collects after the process. This ash additionally can be mixed with soil to increase its fertility. Despite burning the pads at 350 degrees centigrade, the machine remains cool from outside.

Amhi Girgavkar has demanded the BMC to make installation of sanitary pad disposal machines mandatory. The group plans to meet Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Shiv Sena President Uddhav Thackeray and Mumbai commissioner Ajoy Mehta to discuss the same.
