After starting the e-waste initiative in his own school, 15-year-old Ghatkopar resident will now be spreading it across different states. Nishant Jain had suffered from bronchitis due to the harmful smoke from the Deonar dumping yard in 2015, which led him to start collecting dry cell batteries to recycle them.

Slowly, Jain started spreading awareness about his initiative in different schools and residential societies. Currently, the e-waste recycling initiative is spread across 25 schools in the city.

Noticing his passion, his 10-year-old younger brother Prayrit Jain also joined hands to create e-waste awareness.

"The batteries have chemicals inside and when they come in contact with heat, they explode. The dry cell batteries do not dry daily due to which it takes time to collect them. Currently, 25 schools are actively participating in the e-waste collection drive. Along with Bangalore-based Ashoka Youth Venture, this year we will be spreading the initiative across 13 schools associated with them in different states. They have two changemaker schools in Mumbai, and soon the drive will start there."

According to researchers, India consumes around 2.5 billion batteries every year. "This year, in the second week of April, we started the e-waste collection initiative at PACE Andheri. The initiative is receiving good support. Social media has been a helping hand in keeping in touch with volunteers in different schools who keep track of the collected batteries in schools," added Jain.

While Jain's younger brother had earlier collected e-waste in primary sections of his school, he will now continue the initiative in the secondary section too.
