Bones connected to Sheena Bora murder case have been submitted to the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL), Kalina, by Khar Police station, confirmed sources on Tuesday. The lab has received three samples from the police – a femur or a thigh bone, and two pieces of teeth.

The dioxyribonucleic acid (DNA) tests will be conducted on the samples of the bone and teeth. “The bones and teeth are believed to be three years old. In spite of the time lapse, there is a possibility of extracting DNA from tooth pulp and bone cells for processing,” said a senior scientist from FSL.

It is a challenging process to extract DNA from the bones and teeth, as the samples have to be decalcified, which means that the calcium component has to be removed. “The calcium interacts with the tests and therefore, has to be removed. The bone powder will be treated suitably and the solution containing bone cells will be injected in the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) machine to amplify and make multiple copies of DNA,” said the scientist.

A PCR machine, a contraption worth Rs1 crore, has been used to perform DNA tests, since 2004 at the Kalina FSL.

The DNA from bones and teeth will be compared with DNA extracted from the accused Indrani Mukerjea's blood sample. “Any biological sample retains 50% of the mother's DNA and 50% of the father's. Currently, Indrani's blood sample are to be compared with the DNA extracted from the bones and the teeth samples in question,” said the scientist. On Tuesday, Indrani's alleged first husband, Siddartha Das came out in open and claimed that deceased Sheena, was his and Indrani's daughter. “If we receive Siddarth's blood samples and compare them with the DNA from bone and teeth samples, we can establish or rule out the question of paternity,” said the scientist. The Kalina FSL has yet not received Das's blood sample. By analysis of the skeletal remains in question, sex of the deceased will be established. Further by comparing the DNA of the unknown sample with DNA of Indrani's blood sample, it will be established if Indrani is indeed the mother of the deceased or not. The The testing will take a minimum of four days, added the scientist.

Also, blood samples of Mikhail, believed to be half brother of Sheena and Indrani's driver, Shyamvar Rai, have been submitted in Kalina FSL. DNA profiling of Mikhail is also in progress to ascertain his biological relationship with Indrani, said sources.
