Friends catch chain snatcher after chase, hand him over to cops

In an exemplary show of courage, two youngsters from Bandra caught a chain snatcher after chasing him from Dadar to Mahim. The thief was fleeing after snatching a senior citizen's chain on Sunday. The duo caught hold of the culprit and handed him over to the police.

In an exemplary show of courage, two youngsters from Bandra caught a chain snatcher after chasing him from Dadar to Mahim. The thief was fleeing after snatching a senior citizen's chain on Sunday. The duo caught hold of the culprit and handed him over to the police.

On Sunday evening, Shilpa Moghe, 62, a resident of Girgaum, was returning home after attending an event at Suryavanshi Hall at Vir Savarkar Road in Dadar (West) along with her husband, two daughters and a granddaughter. As they were walking near Amigo Hotel, a man seated pillion on a motorcycle snatched Moghe's chain and fled towards Siddhivinayak temple's direction.

Two friends — Savio Andrew Lonappa, 28 and Shamshad Shaikh — spotted the chain snatchers fleeing. "Both Lonappa and Shaikh chased the chain snatchers for one and a half kilometers and managed to accost them near a mosque after ramming their bike into theirs. One chain snatcher lost balance and fell," said Parshuram Kakad, senior police inpector from Shivaji Park police station.

Out of both the chain snatchers, the rider managed to escape but the pillion rider was caught with the help of locals. The accused has been identified as Ramzan Shabbir Shaikh, 28. Shaikh is a resident of Govandi.

The friends Lonappa and Shaikh took Ramzan to the Mahim police station which later informed the Shivaji Park police station about the arrest. "Ramzan told us during the investigations that he is involved in a total of 35 chain snatching incidents across the city. The police have launched a manhunt to nab Ramzan's associate.

Ramzan was booked under section 392 (punishment for robbery) under Indian Penal Code (IPC) and was produced before a court. He was sent to police custody till Wednesday.
