Four drowning cases have been reported by Juhu and Santa Cruz police station in the past four days. Although the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has appointed four agencies to man the beach, when it comes to crisis situation of rescuing people from deep waters, none of them have proved successful.

Four agenceis — Fire Brigade, Life Guards, Security Guards and Civil Defence are entrusted the responsibility of manning the six beaches across the city — Girgaon, Juhu, Dadar, Versova, Aksa and Gorai.

On an average, beaches are visited by thousands of people daily. On holidays, festivals and school vacations, beaches like Juhu witnesses a crowd of 10,000- 15,000. The BMC has grossly failed to come up with a mechanism over the years to deal with the state of affairs.

dna on June 16 had reported about how the Fire Brigade has purchased speedboats but they are not able to use them for rescue purpose as the boats are not registered.
However, the fire department of the BMC claims that their job is loaded as they are dealing with saving human lives. "Our lifeguards have to ensure that a life is saved. There is lot of pressure on them. They are trying their best with whatever manpower they have," said a senior fire official.
