Brace for a troubled start to the week as trains will be running late and will also get cancelled. The Western Railway began an 8-hour mega block at Elphinstone Road on Sunday at 9.30 pm, which would continue for ten hours. This comes following the works for the foot overbridge (FOB) covering Parel and Elphinstone Road stations, including the proposed Parel terminus.

The WR authorities will be cancelling 34 services, 6 partial cancellations of local trains, while 38 services will be diverted on Down through (fast line towards Borivali) between Mumbai Central and Mahim stations. "During the block the trains would not halt at Mahalaxmi, Elphinstone Road and Matunga stations," said Ravinder Bhakar, chief PRO, WR.

The long distance trains too will be running late by 10-15 minutes. The mega block is expected to go on till 6am, however due to the quantum of work it is likely that there could be delay. In the previous block on February 18 for the same foot over bridge (FOB), the Central Railway had carried out on Parel end of this same FOB during which the block extended for one-and-half hours.

"These would pass over all six rail lines and so it is time consuming. The longest block will be over the slow lines from where the cranes shall be operated. We expect this FOB to be ready for public before June," said a WR official.

During this block period the WR authorities will launch nine girders of 40 meters each. These would weigh over 25 tonne each for this 12-meter wide foot over bridge that is coming up right next to the one built by the Indian Army. They would be using 500 tonne crane for this purpose and keeping two 25 tonne cranes as standby. This one is right next to the recently inaugurated FOB built by the Army that was completed in 117 days.
