Engineering: Maha advantage for Maharashtra board students, say other candidates

However, this has left students from the CBSE and ICSE boards in tizzy. While these two boards dominate in IITs and other national and centrally funded engineering institutes, these students say they at a loss in Maharashtra.

The directorate of technical education has declared the percentile corresponding to the class 12 marks (PCM) for all school boards along with the percentile of the JEE (main) scores which would be used for computing the composite score and then the state rankings for admission in engineering courses.

However, this has left students from the CBSE and ICSE boards in tizzy. While these two boards dominate in IITs and other national and centrally funded engineering institutes, these students say they at a loss in Maharashtra.

Although the state considers JEE (main) score and class 12 marks (PCM) for engineering admission with the equal weightage, it uses percentiles of the two scores (which give relative position of the candidate in the given board) rather than the scores.

"The ICSE students face the brunt as their percentile drops due to a large number of high scorers and lesser number of candidates appearing in the board exam compared to state boards. In this tough contest, even a difference of eighth place after the decimal matters and we lose out 8-10 percent points," rued a student.

"Though the NITs and others central institutes also use percentiles to prepare rankings, their 60:40 formula which gives only 40% weightage to class 12 marks, gives some respite to us but Maharashtra DTE gives 50% weightage which skews our chances," said another student. She also cited how equal marks in three different boards elicit three different percentiles with state board being at top.

As against 3,48,420 lakh candidates who appeared for the HSC exam in PCM this year, there were 30,334 and 3,91,675 candidates from ICSE and CBSE respectively, states the DTE figures.

Last year, DTE had received many complaints on this issue which were rejected by the officials citing "pre-defined" rules. DTE officials say they use the same formula used by the CBSE. "The formula is given by the Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata and the state has approved it," said a top official.

Composite formula

1) JEE percentile (Jo) = Number of students who scored marks less than the candidate/ Total number of students appeared for the JEE (Main) *100

2) Board percentile (P)= Number of students who scored marks less than the candidate in the respective Board Exam/ Total number of students appeared for the subjects Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics in the respective Board Exam*100

3) Composite Score = 0.5 x JEE Percentile (Po) + 0.5 x Board Percentile (P)

How PCM marks percentile changes with the board

1) 280/300 marks- HSC: 99.81975776

2) 280/300 marks-CBSE: 93.31973366

3) 280/300 marks-ISC: 93.58145975
