While common motorists are expected wait to for long to pay toll charges at nakas, such a wait proved too much to bear for Thane guardian minister Eknath Shinde’s bodyguard. When the bodyguard faced a delay at Ghoti toll naka on the Mumbai-Nashik highway, he allegedly smashed the glass screen at a toll booth, resulting in injuries to a toll collection agent. The police are investigating the matter.

At around 1.30 am on Wednesday, Shinde’s convoy was returning from Nashik to Thane. There was a huge traffic jam on the highway and Shinde’s car is said to have passed through the VIP lane of the toll naka. One of the cars from the convoy was stopped by the toll employee Sandeep Dhongade, 25.

“There were four-five more vehicles in front of the car which belonged to Shinde’s entourage,” said an officer from Ghoti police station. “The person in the car was a bodyguard, and asked Dhongade to let him go on priority basis, but Dhongade refused,” he added

This angered the bodyguard who allegedly banged on the glass window of the toll cabin. “The glass broke and pierced Dhongade’s face, who was then taken to Nashik civil hospital for further treatment,” he said.

Though police have registered a case under sections 337 (causing hurt by endangering the personal safety of another person) and 427 (mischief) of the Indian Penal Code, no arrests have been made.

“We are not sure about the identity of the bodyguard and are going through the CCTV footage to confirm the same,” said the officer. There were two bodyguards in the car and hence, there is no clarity on who was responsible for this incident, sources said.

When contacted, Shinde said that he was not aware about the incident as his car had already exited the toll both. “It was when I reached Thane that the Dhoti police called me and informed me about the said incident. The police can go through the CCTV footage, and if found guilty, we will take action against the bodyguard,” Shinde said.
