In yet another incident that raises grave concerns about women's safety in the city, a couple travelling on a motorcycle in the wee hours of Sunday was accosted by two bike-borne men at Gamdevi. The duo identified themselves as cops and demanded the motorcycle's documents. They proceeded to separate the couple and rode each of them separately till JJ Marg, at which point, the victims realised something was amiss and raised the alarm.

A patrolling police party came to their rescue and managed to catch hold of one of the two men who were posing as policemen. The arrested impersonator has been identified as Salim Irshaad Khan, 42, a rickshaw driver who resides in Mumbra.

The complainant is a 22-year-old from Koparkhairane, Navi Mumbai, who works at a private firm in Mahape.

According to the police, on Saturday night, the complainant and his friend-and-colleague had gone to Andheri to meet some kin, and then decided to head to Marine Drive via Haji Ali.

Around 2am, when they reached Hughes Road, they heard a whistle. When the complainant looked back, he saw the bike-borne men chasing them and blowing a whistle. Assuming the two were cops, he stopped his bike, police said.

"The men stopped their vehicle near the couple's bike and, identifying themselves as policemen, asked for the complainant's driving licence. When the complainant asked for their ID card, they slapped and manhandled him, and forcibly took away his licence, saying that they would have to come to the police station with them to claim it back," said an officer from Gamdevi police station.

While one drove the complainant's bike and made him ride pillion with him, the other made his friend sit on his bike. "After some time, when no police station seemed to be in sight, the victims started shouting for help. At JJ Marg a police vehicle passing by spotted them. The complainant managed to pull out the keys from the ignition and stopped the bike, after which the policemen caught Khan. The other impostor, however, fled the area," said the officer.

The JJ Marg police registered a case and transferred it to Gamdevi police for further probe. The police have seized the whistle and the motorcycle - which turns out to be stolen property - from Khan. He has been booked under IPC sections related to abducting a woman, impersonation and assault.
