Drunk mob assaults cops in Kandivli

Three cops, including a woman police inspector, were assaulted and manhandled by a drunk mob during a Ganpati procession at Kandivli (E) on Wednesday night. The volunteers in the procession attacked the police after they were told to stop playing music as they had breached the deadline.

Three cops, including a woman police inspector, were assaulted and manhandled by a drunk mob during a Ganpati procession at Kandivli (E) on Wednesday night. The volunteers in the procession attacked the police after they were told to stop playing music as they had breached the deadline.

According to senior police inspector Dilip Yadav of Samta Nagar police station, the incident occurred around 10.30pm when volunteers of a Ganpati mandal from Hanuman Nagar were on the North-bound Western Express Highway.

"The volunteers were playing loud music. A police sub-inspector and a constable present at the spot informed the mob that loudspeakers are allowed only till 10pm and asked them to stop the music," said Yadav. He added that volunteers, which included women, went on to assault the cops with sticks. The sub-inspector sustained a fracture on his finger. "When a woman inspector intervened, she was also attacked by women volunteers. Then we reached the spot and had to use of force to control the situation," he said.

"Those apprehended were taken to the Shatabdi Hospital in Kandivli and their medical reports revealed that they were under the influence of alcohol," Yadav added.

Those arrested have been booked under sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty), 326 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt by dangerous weapons or means), 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 141 (unlawful assembly), 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly) and 147 (punishment for rioting) of the Indian Penal Code.
